Lutsen Mountain: Best Day Trip Exploring the Alpine Slide, Gondola, and More

Lutsen Ski Resort in the Summer

The Lutsen Mountains, nestled on the shores of Lake Superior, transforms into a summer paradise that captivates visitors with its stunning scenery and a myriad of outdoor activities. The panoramic views of Lake Superior set the stage for a memorable day trip, offering a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Originally my family was going to spend a day at Grand Marais, but when I saw the sign for Lutsen Ski Resort, I just needed to pull off and take a look. We drove past the alpine slide, saw the gondola, and felt the cozy atmosphere of a ski resort in the summer. My kids pleaded with me to stop and experience the mountain adventures.  Well, we never made it to Grand Marais and instead we had an unforgettable day exploring the Lutsen Mountains. Here are the highlights from our visit.

Lutsen Alpine Slide

A family favorite at Lutsen is the Alpine Slide, a thrilling descent down the mountainside that promises excitement for visitors of all ages. The slide, suitable for kids and adults alike, features a hand brake for speed regulation, ensuring a safe yet exhilarating experience. Families can save time by purchasing tickets online, with options for combo tickets or adventure passes.

The Alpine Slide's popularity with kids is undeniable. Children aged 2-5 can ride in the lap of an adult, making it a perfect family adventure. While rain may close the slide temporarily, during the heart of summer, it typically operates daily, providing endless fun for visitors.

We bought the combo ticket but if I were to do it over again, I would buy the adventure pass. The slide takes about 5 minutes once you have purchased your ticket. But we could have spent hours having family fun on the two mountain slides. Also, controlling the hand brake on the alpine slide cart takes some getting used to. I was hesitant to purchase the adventure pass because my kids were 4-, 6-, and 8-year-old at the time. I was concerned that my youngest would be scared and wouldn’t sit in our lap. Well, I was wrong – they all loved it. In hindsight I could have upgraded to an adventure pass, but the kids were getting hungry so we headed to the gondola that took us to the restaurant at the top of the mountain.

Gondola Summit Express

The highlight of Lutsen in the summer is undoubtedly the Summit Express Gondola. Ascending towards the skies, the gondola provides a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape. Towering over the Poplar River, the journey is a breathtaking. My children felt like mountain explorers in the dangling car.

At the summit is the Summit Chalet Eatery. I highly recommend planning your day around eating here. The restaurant overlooks Lake Superior and is an ideal spot for lunch and a bathroom break. If you purchase the combo ticket this is very important since you will have one round trip ticket on the Gondola. Access to the restaurant is solely served via the Summit Express, so plan accordingly!

Summit Chalet Eatery

The Summit Chalet Eatery, located at the top of the gondola, offers more than just a dining experience. It's a chance to absorb the beauty of Lake Superior from a unique vantage point. The restaurant's deck on the mountaintop creates a picturesque setting for a leisurely lunch. Families can enjoy a relaxing meal while surrounded by the breathtaking scenery.

Perhaps I was famished from the slide or my whining kids, but the burger and beer hit the spot. I couldn’t get enough of the views of Lake Superior. This had to be one of the most beautiful places in the Midwest and to enjoy it with a pint was next level. To my delight the viewing deck was a perfect place to see the Superior National Golf Course. I definitely need to come back and play a round on this Northwoods course. Whether you opt for a hearty burger or a refreshing beer, dining on the mountaintop deck is an experience to savor.

Lake Superior Hiking Trail

Before returning to the base resort in the Summit Express Gondola, make sure you check out the Lake Superior Hiking Trail and the surrounding summit ski areas. For those seeking a more active adventure, the Lake Superior Hiking Trail awaits at the peak. Even if hiking isn't your family's forte, a short walk from the gondola leads to a scenic overlook that's worth exploring. The panoramic views of the mountains and forest create a stunning backdrop, making it a must-visit spot.

While the Lake Superior Hiking Trail offers a range of experiences for hikers of all levels, families with younger children can still enjoy the accessible scenic overlook. Venture a little further, and you might encounter fascinating rock formations and glimpses of the ski areas. The trail eventually became too rugged for our 4 and 6 year old, but we enjoyed the short hike.

Lutsen Winery

Just a two-minute drive from Lutsen Ski Resort lies a hidden gem: the North Shore Winery. After a day filled with gondola rides, alpine slides, and scenic hikes, the winery offers a perfect retreat. Indulge in the rich flavors of Boundary Waters Red or the velvety Syrah, making it a delightful stop for wine enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike.
